ABSTRACT

Corporations and small/medium enterprises (SMEs) are subject to a variety of external and internal pressures that often lead to changes in their corporate governance structures and accounting/reporting systems. The environment in which these organizations are collocated has undergone a deep process of change, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, the blockchain, and the energy industry crisis. Business activities represent a critical and a vital component of human existence across the globe—one that is not restricted to a financial standpoint—and their impact on societal, environmental and animal conditions is now undisputed. However, these activities are frequently coupled with allegations of their being the actual causes of those disruptions and collapses that persist in escaping the scrutiny of international governments. For the effective delivery of sustainable business activities, the concepts of governance and accountability are crucial, and the future of the inhabitants of planet Earth is arguably dependent on the ability of corporations (through their entire value chain) to govern themselves well and to demonstrate accountability to their many stakeholders. This should be achieved through the adoption of good governance standards which are well accepted, and that are globally harmonised with ‘Environmental, Social and Governance' (ESG) reporting tools that are able to strategically assess and evaluate risk exposure and provide forward-looking information. In this critical context, few studies have actually examined these issues thoroughly, and, because the findings of those studies have been contradictory, there is still no definitive understanding of the causes of weak accounting and reporting tools for ESG dynamics under conditions of disruption. A systematic literature network analysis (SLNA) is used in this study to examine the evolution of the ESG reporting research domain based on existing relationships (e.g., aggregation, cross-citations and isolation) among authors contributing to the field. The findings demonstrate the current state of the art, disclosing interesting and timely future research directions. Furthermore, this study employs a novel approach known as SLNA to conduct the analyses, confirming its efficacy as a tool for dynamic analysis also within the field of sustainability accounting research.

ABSTRACT

Corporate failure suggests that weak corporate governance leads to frail institutions and exposes them to severe crises. Asian countries have faced financial crises in three different periods, most recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A crisis will trigger structural changes in corporate governance to enable firms to either respond to, or prevent, the reoccurrence of potentially similar events. The characteristic of corporate governance practice in Asian countries are also unique due to some institutional and informal factors. These will alter direction and future trend of research in corporate governance in Asian region. The objective of this study is to utilize a bibliometric analysis which focuses on research trends and themes, and citations (with additional inclusive visualization) and perform in-depth content analysis to trace the evolution and identify knowledge of corporate governance in Asian countries from 2001 to 2021. Following bibliometric analysis, a sample of 656 articles on corporate governance in Asian countries has been extracted and analyzed from the Scopus database. The results indicate that there is a growing of interest in corporate governance in Asian countries from 2001 to 2021. Eight major themes have been recognized: corporate governance, corporate social responsibility and financial performance, corporate strategy and performance, agency theory, corporate sustainability, audit and agency problems, firm size, and business ethics. Major findings, shortcomings, and directions for future research are also discussed in this study. In general, most cited articles related to corporate governance theme explain the importance of corporate governance in companies with the focus on preventing financial fraud, impact on earnings management, and cost of equity capital in the market and reporting methods.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research study was to examine challenges experienced by academics at Stellenbosch University that hinder their research productivity during the COVID-19 pandemic, involving 248 academics who completed an online questionnaire. A qualitative analysis of open-ended responses revealed five themes that characterized the extent that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted these academics ' research productivity: Online Teaching, Increase in Research Productivity, No Difference to Research Productivity, Reduced Research Productivity, and No Research Productivity. A mixed methods analysis revealed that only 25% of academics were not adversely affected by online teaching in terms of research productivity. Two thirds of the academics experienced either a reduction in productivity or reported no research productivity at all. Compared to academics who reported an increase in productivity, academics who reported undertaking no research productivity at all tended to be women, not to hold a professor position, not to have a doctorate degree, to have less experience as academics, to have access at home to a tablet, but not to have access at home to cellphone data.

ABSTRACT

In her article, "Kazuo Ishiguro and the Service Economy,” Kate Montague argues that Kazuo Ishiguro's novels enact a poetics of work for the present moment—not just at the level of narrative but also in the kind of language used to describe the service economies his characters are doomed to inhabit. In his best-known novels, a clinical, bureaucratic, and even glorifying lexicon of "donations,” "completions,” "substitutions,” and "lifting” is betrayed by the reality of work grounded in horror. In Ishiguro's worlds, which are very much our own, the out-sourcing of reproductive and domestic labor is enabled by a larger system in which state technologies as well as linguistic forms mark certain bodies as readily exploitable and disposable. Looking comparatively between dystopian literary form and recent critical work on the service and care industries, the article shows how the tension between a euphemistic language of service and a social logic of mass death speaks to our own moment and to a crisis of care that, after years of austerity and now a global pandemic, defines the present.

ABSTRACT

The biodiversity and climate crises require diverse solutions, yet peer reviewed literature is dominated by men from the Global North. The Nature Conservancy (TNC), as one of the world's largest conservation non‐profit organizations, provides a case study to better understand how women publish relative to men in conservation science. By examining all papers from Web of Science with at least one TNC author (1968–2019), we found that women at TNC are underrepresented: only 36% of authors were women, just 31% of all first authorships were women, and 24% of last authorships were women. Women in the Global South were the least represented group, making up less than 2% of all TNC authorships. By comparison seven individual men in the Global North comprised 9% of all TNC authorships. Encouragingly, the total number of women publishing at TNC has improved over the decades;however, the proportion of women to men remains below gender parity, and the proportion of women from Global South remains consistently below 3%. These results align with overall trends in conservation and science, and we provide recommendations for the global conservation science community on how to address this enduring and significant issue in publishing.

ABSTRACT

Higher education institutions have a strong potential to encourage society to make significant changes, preparing individuals for active and responsible participation in society. As one of the tasks of the higher education system is to take an active role in overcoming the challenges that affect certain parts of society, especially vulnerable groups, it should be able to provide equal opportunities for all students. Digital competences in education are crucial today, so the question arises as to whether sufficient investment is being made into research in this field. The aim of this paper is to offer a systematic literature review that focuses on two types of research currently conducted in the field of digital inclusion in education: (i) use and adaptation of digital educational tools for students with disabilities and (ii) digital competences of teachers. For the purposes of the research, the method of content analysis of recent scientific papers was used. The search analysis was conducted from March to April 2022, while the search of papers in Scopus and Web of Science databases was limited to the period from 2019 to 2022. Terms used in the search were as following: digital competencies, disabilities, higher education. This review includes an analysis of existing concepts of digital inclusion of persons with disabilities in the higher education process as well as proposed methods for assessing digital competencies of teachers in higher education and pursues three objectives: (i) to describe the concepts of digital inclusion, (ii) to provide an overview of trends and (iii) to identify challenges in assessing the digital competences of teachers in higher education related to digital inclusion. Through consideration of these goals, this paper presents an innovative approach to research in this field and emphasizes the need to conduct similar research to promote the development of higher education.
